Shinya Yamanaka

Director and Professor, Center for iPS Cell Research and Application (CiRA), Kyoto University, Japan

Shinya successfully reprogrammed adult mouse (2006) and human (2007) somatic cells into what are now called induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells, an alternative to embryonic stem cells with huge therapeutic potential. For the achievement, he won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2012.
